La liste est basée sur l’ouvrage The Systematics of the Genus Morpho Fabricius, 1807 (Blandin, 2007). Elle a été complétée en y ajoutant de nombreuses sous-espèces décrites depuis la parution de cet ouvrage. Elle a été modifiée suite à de récentes études phylogénétiques (Cassildé et al., 2010 ; Cassildé et al., 2012 ; Penz et al., 2012). Cassildé et al. (2010) ont montré que les espèces M. marcus et M. eugenia doivent être séparées du sous-genre Cytheritis, pour former un nouveau sous-genre, Deyrollia Cassildé & Blandin, 2010. Les études phylogéntiques montrent aussi que les sous-genres Cytheritis (sensu stricto) et Balachowskyna sont proches : Balachwskyna et ici traité comme synonyme plus récent de Cytheritis sensu stricto. De même, le sous-genre Pessonia est considéré comme synonyme plus récent de Morpho (sensu stricto), conformément à Penz et al. (2012) et Blandin & Purser (2013). L’ordre des sous-genres a été modifié, en relation avec la succession plausible des divergences dans l’arbre phylogénétique (voir Blandin & Purser, 3013). Par ailleurs, les résultats obtenus par Cassildé et al. (2012) ont confirmé la séparation de M. sulkowskyi et de M. lympharis, telle que proposée par Lamas (2004).
Au sein de chaque sous-genre, l’espèce-type est placée en premier, suivie par les autres espèces dans l’ordre chronologique de description. Les sous-espèces sont citées dans l’ordre chronologique des descriptions.
Pour les synonymies, voir Lamas (2004) et Blandin (2007). Les sous-espèces récemment décrites devront faire l’objet de révisions critiques, et plusieurs mises en synonymie ne sont pas exclues.

The list is based on the book The systematics of the genus Morpho Fabricius, 1807 (Blandin, 2007). It has been completed by many subspecies described after the publication of this book, and modified according to recent phylogenetic studies (Cassildé et al., 2010; Cassildé et al., 2012; Penz et al., 2012). Cassildé et al. (2010) showed that M. marcus and M. eugenia should be separated from the subgenus Cytheritis: they form a new subgenus, Deyrollia Cassildé & Blandin, 2010. Phylogenetic studies also showed that the subgenera Cytheritis (sensu stricto) and Balachowskyna are closely related: here, Balachowskyna is considered as a junior synonym of Cytheritis. Similarly, the subgenus Pessonia is considered as a junior synonym of Morpho (sensu stricto), according to Penz et al. (2012) and Blandin & Purser (2013). The subgenera order in the list has been modified, in relation with the plausible chronological sequence of divergences in the phylogenetic tree (see Blandin & Purser, 2013). Moreover, results obtained by Cassildé et al. (2012) confirmed the separation of M. sulkowskyi and M. lympharis, as proposed by Lamas (2004).
Within each subgenus, the type-species is presented first, and followed by others in chronological order of description. The subspecies are listed in chronological order of description.
For synonymies, see Lamas (2004) and Blandin (2007). Recently described subspecies must be critically revised, and several synonymies are probable.
